After vi years, the sketch was adult into Rick and Morty, a one-half-hour prime time show that was a hitting for Adult Swim, receiving universal acclaim across all seasons. Aslope the original television serial, the characters of the show accept been featured in a diverseness of media, including spin-offs, comic books, musical releases and video games.

The series centers on the misadventures of contemptuous mad scientist Rick Sanchez C-137 and his good-hearted merely fretful grandson Morty Smith, who split their fourth dimension between domestic life and interdimensional adventures, with the characters travelling to other planets and dimensions through portals and Rick's flying car. Different versions of the characters inhabit other dimensions throughout the evidence's multiverse and their personal characteristics can vary from one reality to another. The Rick and Morty franchise has received widespread critical acclaim, winning 2 Annie and Emmy Awards.

Background [edit]

Cosmos [edit]

Justin Roiland conceived of the idea for Rick and Morty equally an development of his 2006 short film parody series The Existent Blithe Adventures of Doctor and Mharti, inspired by Dorsum to the Time to come and Scud: The Dispensable Assassin, the latter serial of which hereafter Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon had written for.[one]

Themes [edit]

Dan Harmon has described Rick and Morty as "a never-ending fart joke wrapped around a studied expect into nihilism".[2] The formula of the series consists of juxtapositioning two conflicting scenarios: an extremely selfish, alcoholic grandfather dragging his grandson along for interdimensional adventures, intercut with domestic family drama,[ane] [3] while addressing the insignificance of human beingness every bit compared to the size of the universe, with no recognizable divine presence, every bit described by H. P. Lovecraft's philosophy of cosmicism. The characters of the serial deal with existential dread and cosmic horror, either by asserting the utility of scientific discipline over magic or past choosing a life in ignorant bliss.[4] However, as Joachim Heijndermans of Geeks notes, none of the characters appear able to handle the absurd and cluttered nature of the universe, as Jerry gets by through deprival while Rick is a "depressed, substance-addicted, suicidal mess".[5]

Harmon describes the titular Rick Sanchez equally a cocky-interested anarchist, who doesn't like being told what to do.[vi] He believes that the character'due south life on a larger scale has caused him mental illness,[seven] and opines that "the cognition that nothing matters—while authentic—gets you nowhere".[8] Matthew Bulger of The Humanist noted that the creators of the series were trying to communicate the message that we need to focus on homo relationships and not preoccupy our minds with unanswerable questions, in order to notice a sense of purpose and alive a better life.[nine] Eric Armstrong of The New Republic notes that Morty represents the audience, every bit he is "mostly there to react to Rick's deranged schemes". The grapheme is transformed past the truths he discovers during his interdimensional adventures with his grandfather. However, instead of sinking into depression, Morty accepts these truths that empower him to value his own life.[10]

Occasionally, characters will acknowledge an episode'southward narrative or hint at the presence of a fourth wall, suggesting that they are enlightened of the fact that they are characters of a television series. Thereunder, Troy Patterson of The New Yorker notes that Rick and Morty "supplies an artful answer to the question of what follows postmodernism: a decadent regurgitation of all its tropes, all at once, leavened by some humanistic blahs."[11] Sean Sebastian of Junkee says that the show tin be both hilarious and securely disturbing at the same time equally information technology excels at the "intersection between big ideas, flippancy and wit."[12]

Main characters [edit]

The chief characters of the bear witness are the members of the Smith household, which consists of parents Jerry and Beth (and Space Beth), their children Summertime and Morty, and Beth's begetter, Rick Sanchez, who lives with them every bit a guest. Co-ordinate to Justin Roiland, the family lives exterior of Seattle, Washington.[13]

  • Richard "Rick" Sanchez, voiced by Justin Roiland,[14] [fifteen] is a sociopathic, nihilistic, narcissistic, self-centered, alcoholic mad scientist who is the male parent of Beth Smith and the maternal grandfather of Morty and Summer. Roiland considers his voice for Rick to be a "horrible Doc Brownish manic impression".[16]
  • Mortimer "Morty" Smith, Sr., voiced by Justin Roiland,[14] [xv] is Rick's neurotic xiv-year-quondam grandson, son of Jerry and Beth Smith and younger brother of Summer Smith, who is frequently dragged into Rick'due south misadventures. One of Morty'south interdimensional counterparts, President Morty Smith (nicknamed "Evil Morty" by fans and the media), serves equally the main antagonist of the serial. Roiland considers his initial voice for Morty to be a "horrible Marty McFly impression".[16]
  • Gerald "Jerry" Smith, voiced past Chris Parnell, is Summer's and Morty'southward insecure 34-year-old father, Beth'due south husband, and Rick'due south son-in-police, who strongly disapproves of Rick'south influence over his family.[fourteen]
  • Summer Smith, voiced by Spencer Grammar,[14] is Morty's 17-year-old (18 later season 5) older sister, a more conventional and often superficial teenager, who is obsessed with improving her status among her peers. Summertime is generally like to her mother, as she is often shown to be very smart and humorous, only she has too shown elements of Jerry's approval-seeking.
  • Bethany "Beth" Smith (née Sanchez), voiced by Sarah Chalke, is Rick's daughter, Summer and Morty's female parent, and Jerry'due south married woman. She is the most assertive force in her household, while also displaying traits of selfishness, sense of humor, and intelligence. Beth is unperturbed by her father's destructive and dangerous tendencies effectually her son. She, from childhood, views Rick more than favorably than her mother due to the parental separation.[ane] Harmon expanded upon this origin in an interview: "Kids can sometimes idolize their worst parent and blame their supportive parent for chasing off the dad with the guts to leave. ... She believes that Rick, every bit crazy as he is, is the better of her two parents fifty-fifty though she was raised by her mother and she blames her female parent's unremarkability on her father's deviation and volition do annihilation to go on her father dorsum in her life."[i] In "The ABC's of Beth", it is revealed that Beth shares the same sociopathic tendencies as her father. Rick offers to brand Beth a clone of herself to tend to her family while she can explore the multiverse. In "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri", it is revealed that Rick did indeed brand a clone of Beth, as in that location is another Space Beth fighting a new and improved version of the Galactic Federation, having usurped Rick as the "Most Wanted" in the galaxy. Nonetheless, Rick erased his memory so that he does not call up which Beth is the original and which is the clone, which results in both Beths not caring nigh the truth or about Rick. Chalke praised the "really interesting dynamic" between the characters, expressing interest in futurity seasons of the series depicting "all of the things she used to do [as a child], like force Rick to make her heed command pilus clips and so people would like her. Just seeing her behave and so much similar Rick at such a young age would exist really fun."[17]

Idiot box serial [edit]

Doc and Mharti shorts on Aqueduct 101 (2006) [edit]

Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon first met at the latter'southward Los Angeles-based non-profit monthly short film festival Aqueduct 101,[19] at which participants submit a curt film in the format of a pilot, and a live audition decides which pilots continue as series. Roiland, and so a producer on reality programming, began submitting shock value—"ill and twisted" pilots to the festival a year after its launch, in 2004, eliciting dislocated reactions from the audience to which Harmon took a liking, leading to the two beginning an ongoing collaboration.[19] In 2006, following the counterfoil of Roiland's House of Cosbys, a series he regarded equally "intensely creatively stifling," Roiland funneled his creative energies into creating a web series for Aqueduct 101. The result was The Existent Blithe Adventures of Physician and Mharti, an animated short starring parodies of Doc Chocolate-brown and Marty McFly, characters from the Dorsum to the Futurity film trilogy, while promoting Harmon's run on Scud: The Disposable Assassin.[20] Harmon would afterwards dub the shorts "a bastardization, a pornographic vandalization" of what Rick and Morty would ultimately stand for, despite their positive critical reception.[1] [21]

Roiland, who voiced the title characters in Medico and Mharti, would afterwards reprise his roles in Rick and Morty.[1]

Rick and Morty (2013–nowadays) [edit]

In 2012, Harmon was briefly fired from his NBC sitcom Customs. The Adult Swim network, searching for a more prime-time, "hit" prove,[3] approached Harmon presently afterward, who initially viewed the channel as unfit for his style, citing his unfamiliarity with animation and his process for creating goggle box focusing more than heavily on dialogue, characters, and story than popular blithe serial of the time.[21] Instead, Harmon phoned Roiland to inquire if he had whatsoever ideas for an animated serial, to which Roiland proposed a series focused on the Doc and Mharti characters, ultimately renamed Rick and Morty.[1] Roiland initially wanted the show's run time to consist of one 11-minute segment, but Adult Swim pushed for a half-hour program.[three] Harmon felt the all-time way to extend the voices into a program would be to build a family effectually the characters, to which decision Developed Swim evolution executive Nick Weidenfeld suggested that Rick be made to be Morty's grandfather. Having pitched multiple goggle box programs that did not get off the footing, Roiland was initially very unreceptive to others attempting to give notes on his pitch.[1] Prior to developing Rick and Morty, he had created iii failed animated pilots for Trick, and he had begun to feel "burned out" with developing television.[21]

The first draft of the series' pilot was completed in half dozen hours on the Paramount Pictures lot in Dan Harmon's unfurnished Community office. The duo had broken the story that solar day, sold the pilot, and then saturday down to write.[21] [23] Roiland, while acknowledging a tendency for procrastination, encouraged Harmon to stay and write the entire outset draft. "We were sitting on the floor, cantankerous-legged with laptops and I was nigh to get upwardly and go habitation and he said, 'Await, if you go dwelling, it might take us 3 months to write this affair. Stay here correct now and nosotros tin write it in six hours.' He just had a premonition virtually that," recalled Harmon.[21] Adult Swim was initially unsure of Roiland doing both voices, partially due to the undeveloped nature of the character of Morty. Harmon wrote iv short premises in which Morty took a more than assertive function and sent information technology to Mike Lazzo. Adult Swim later on placed a tamer Goggle box-14 rating on the program, which initially was met with reluctance from the prove's staff. The network'due south reason behind the rating was that it would before long begin broadcasting in prime-time, competing with major programs.[21]

Harmon described the series as a cantankerous between Matt Groening'south ii shows The Simpsons and Futurama, balancing family unit life with heavy science fiction.[24] [19] Harmon has stated that his inspiration behind much of the concept and sense of humour for the serial comes from various British television series, such equally The Hitchhiker'south Guide to the Galaxy and Medico Who. He figures that the audience volition only understand developments from Morty's point of view, but stated "we don't desire to be the companions. We desire to hang out with the Md, we idolize the Doctor, simply we don't remember like him, and that's actually interesting."[seven]

Rick and Morty has received universal acclaim, holding an approval rating of 94% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes for the entire series.[25] While later seasons would focus on the wider Smith family unit, Rick was the lead graphic symbol in most of the kickoff two seasons. In July 2020, following the conclusion of the fourth season, lxx new episodes over an unspecified number of seasons.[26] Hallmarks of the evidence include the opening sequence;[27] its theme song;[28] the Mr. Meeseeks and Mr. Poopybutthole characters, which have themselves inspired an offshoot of merchandise; its use of cultural references; sight gags; and the use of catchphrases, such as Rick's drunken "Wubba lubba dub dub".[24]

Rick and Morty has won several awards since information technology debuted every bit a series, including a Critics' Choice Television Award,[29] two Annie Awards,[30] an American Movie house Editors Award,[31] and two Primetime Emmy Awards.[32]
